“The Race” — Tay-K’s Sprint To The Spotlight

If a tree falls down in the forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?  This philosophical question may not have been in the mind of then 16 year old Tay-K, but the idea of his voice never being heard by the world seems to have driven this young man.

Facing the death penalty also tends to put things in a different perspective.  After being arrested for involvement in a home invasion in Mansfield, Texas where another 21 year old individual was murdered, Tay-K was placed on house arrest.  It was at this point that while waiting to hear whether or not he would be tried as an adult for the murder, Tay-K relieved himself of his ankle monitor, sent a tweet, and did the dash.  The young fugitive then travelled to New Jersey, allegedly landing multiple additional altercations during his several months on the lam.  He also recorded “The Race.”  And he also recorded the video.  All while evading authorities.

On June 30th, the inevitable occurred, and Tay-K was apprehended by New Jersey police.  He was extradited to Texas, but not before using his unfortunate circumstance to his advantage.  The very same day, either Tay or someone from his camp released “The Race,” and it has since been a classic example of the sensationalism surrounding underground Hip-Hop.  Multiple rappers, including Lil’ Yachtty, Playboi Carti, and Rico Recklezz to name a few, have all offered support for the emerging freshman.  There have been remixes, and his original entered the Billboard Hot 100 this week at number 70.

If this story brings others to mind, such as Chief Keef’s or XXXTENTACION’s, I assure you’re not alone.  Tay-K’s rise is not novel, but the circumstances surrounding this rap trend of young and street-thorough men never fails to concentrate attention.  Not only is his situation dangerous and tabloid ready, he had enough poise as a young man  to use it all advantageously.  Sure his music is heat, but in this observation is where his real potential shines.  Let’s hope he does beat the case.
